Artem Vassiliev - Cadenza for String Ensemble. This piece is an attempt to experiment with a combination of two contrasting musical ideas. Very gestural and dynamically active type of musical material typical for cadenzas of classic concertos has been used in this piece in an unusual context of harmonically static musical textures. It creates a paradoxical effect. Variations on one chord at the beginning gradually lead us to more complex harmonic structures and clusters in the middle and last sections of the piece. The performers also have a dual function in the piece as being members of the ensemble and as the soloists at the same time.
