Traveling Music was the first work written for the then newly-formed Kronos String Quartet. The year was 1973. It is in three movements. The first is short and sweet and its material recurs late in the 3rd movement. The second movement is fairly complex in its range of textures, moods and developmental processes. It eventually leads to a more straight-forward, driving third movement, based on an underlying 10/8 rhythm over which are laid various solos in free, improvised time.
