Song of Twenty Shadows is a piece about loss, grief, acceptance and healing, composed for Hank Dutt following the passing of his companion. Two solo viola passages contain various shapes of anguish. Cello and violins provide consolation, compassion and support in a struggle for resolution. In the end, the viola is again alone, with elements from the beginning transformed and distilled. This work was first premiered by the Kronos Quartet, of which Hank Dutt is a member.
