Claude Debussy - Syrinx for Solo Flute and Piano, edited by Ervin Monroe. Syrinx, composed by Claude Debussy in 1913, is one of the most important works in the solo flute repertoire and helped establish the modern flute as a vehicle for serious unaccompanied music. Originally titled La Flûte de Pan, it was written as incidental music for Gabriel Mourey’s play Psyché, evoking the mythological god Pan and his pipes.  Its haunting, sensuous melody, flexible rhythms, and impressionistic harmonies give the performer considerable freedom of expression, creating an intimate and almost improvisatory atmosphere.
