Charles-Marie Widor - Suite, Op. 34 for Flute and Piano. Charles-Marie Widor (1844–1937) was a French composer, organist, and teacher whose name became especially associated with the monumental French organ tradition through his ten Organ Symphonies and his long tenure at Saint-Sulpice in Paris. Although best known for his organ music, Widor composed extensively for other instruments and ensembles, demonstrating a refined command of orchestral color and chamber-music textures. His Suite, Op. 34 for flute and piano, composed in 1877, is in four movements (Moderato, Scherzo, Romance, and Final) that combines lyrical elegance with brilliant and technically demanding writing for the flute; it was dedicated to the celebrated French flutist and pedagogue Paul Taffanel, who gave its first performance in 1884.
