Hayes - Hear Us for Mixed Choir (SATB) and Organ - V3140PM
Micah Hayes - Hear Us for Mixed Choir (SATB) and Organ. Hear Us is an introspective piece that uses poem XXIII from John Donne's Litany. One of the most beloved English poets of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Donne's poem is both repentant and thought-provoking, and is particularly well-suited for a liturgical musical setting. It was first performed by the parish choir at St. Mark's Episcopal Church (Arlington, Texas, USA) by Kathy Fox Powell (conductor) and Linton Powell (organist).
A Litany
John Donne (1572-1631)
XXIII.
Hear us, O hear us, Lord; to Thee
A sinner is more music, when he prays,
Than spheres' or angels' praises be,
In panegyric alleluias ;
Hear us, for till Thou hear us, Lord,
We know not what to say ;
Thine ear to our sighs, tears, thoughts, gives voice and word ;
O Thou, who Satan heard'st in Job's sick day,
Hear Thyself now, for Thou in us dost pray.
