Originally composed for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano in 1796, Ludwig van Beethoven's Quintet, Op. 16, this work is thought to be inspired by a quintet with the same instrumentation composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1784. In this edition, rather than create an entirely new piano score (and possibly introduce new errors), a reprint of the original Breitkopf und Härtel score accompanies newly engraved clarinet parts. Additionally, measure numbers and rehearsal numbers have been added to the score that align with the clarinet parts. However, any standard edition of the piano score may be used. The basset horn part can also be played by either an alto clarinet or a second bass clarinet.

Instrumentation:

  • E-Flat Clarinet
  • B-Flat Clarinet
  • Basset Horn/Alto Clarinet (or a 2nd Bass Clarinet)
  • Bass Clarinet
  • Piano
