Night by Franz Abt, arranged for Flute Choir by Austin Alan Scott. Franz Abt (1819–1885) was a German composer and conductor whose enormous output made him one of the most widely published and performed composers of songs and choral music during the nineteenth century. Night (“Die Abendglocken rufen”), Op. 186, No. 3, is a particularly charming example of Abt’s lyrical style. Originally published in 1862 as part of Lieder und Chöre for three female voices and piano, the piece subsequently found a wider life in numerous choral arrangements and songbooks, a testament to the enduring appeal of its simple, evocative melody.
