McMichael - Leland Blues for Low Flute Choir - FC669
Leland Blues by Catherine McMichael, for Low Flute Choir. From the composer: "The Leland Lake Superior Iron Company smelted iron in blast furnaces in the northern Great Lakes region from 1870 until it went bankrupt in 1885. At that time, they dumped the remaining molten material into Lake Michigan. The rapid cooling in the lake waters created a substance like volcanic glass, resulting in a vibrant blue obsidian type stone. These days treasure hunters comb the beaches of Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula near the town of Leland for the coveted Leland Blue pebbles. This is the only place in the world that these stones can be found."
