Bernhard Henrik Crusell was born in Uusikaupunki, Finland, a small village 150 miles northwest of Helsinki, and is the most well-known Finnish-born composer of the classical period. At the age of 16, Crusell was appointed the director of the military band in Stockholm and earned the principal clarinet spot in the Royal Court Orchestra. He also had additional studies in Berlin, Stockholm, and at the Paris Conservatory. Crusell composed a total of three concertos for clarinet, of which the second (Op. 5) has been arranged here for solo clarinet and wind ensemble.
