Souvenir of Turkey, in its original version for piano solo, was written immediately after my wife and I returned from a three-week tour through Turkey in the Spring of 1999. Shortly thereafter, I played the piece for my good friend, clarinetist Lisa Canning, who, liking what she heard, suggested that it be scored for clarinet and strings.
