Franz Strauss’ Nocturno (Op. 7) for horn and piano features both beautiful lyric writing for the horn as well as the instrument’s penchant for operatic heroism and bravura. It has deservedly become one of the most frequently played works of the standard repertoire for horn — in fact, it is a rare semester at any music school when the Franz Strauss Nocturno is not played at least once on the semester jury examinations. Kansas State University Professor of Clarinet Dr. Tod Kerstetter wrote this arrangement for solo horn and wind ensemble for the occasion of the 2006 tour of the K-State Symphony Band to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. The arrangement is dedicated to hornist Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, and to Dr. Frank Tracz and the members of the K-State Symphony Band.
