Jean Sibelius wrote his Symphony No. 3 in 1907 and it was premiered later that year by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. This work, along with his fifth symphony, is unique in that it only has three movements, breaking away from the fairly standard formula during that time of symphonies containing four movements. The middle movement, Andantino con moto, is a nocturne of sorts, with a frequently repeating melody accompanied by a variety of different sounds and textures.
