Georges Hüe (1858–1948) was a French composer whose training with Charles Gounod and César Franck, together with his admiration from contemporaries such as Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré, shaped a distinctive musical language blending late-Romantic lyricism with Impressionistic color. His Fantaisie was composed in 1913 as the competition piece for the Paris Conservatoire and was written for the celebrated flutist and pedagogue Adolphe Hennebains, showcasing the instrument’s expressive range and technical capabilities. Originally conceived for flute and piano, the work was later orchestrated in 1923 and remains one of Hüe’s best-known compositions, combining atmospheric lyricism, cadenza-like passages, and brilliant virtuosity in a single, compact movement.
