Philippe Gaubert - Madrigal for Flute and Piano. Philippe Gaubert (1879–1941) was a distinguished French flutist, composer, conductor, and teacher who studied with the great flutist Paul Taffanel and eventually became professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire and conductor of the Paris Opera. His Madrigal, composed in 1908, is a graceful and lyrical work for flute and piano that reflects the elegance and refinement of the French flute tradition of the early twentieth century. Its contrasting cantabile and more animated passages give the piece both a vocal quality and a sense of rhythmic vitality, echoing the character of the Renaissance madrigal. The work was dedicated to Dr. Jules Bucquoy, a physician and member of the French medical community.
