Edward Elgar (1857–1934) was one of the most important English composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and a central figure in the revival of English concert music. His Romance, Op. 1, composed in 1878 for violin and piano, is an early example of his characteristic lyrical writing and refined melodic sensibility. Though youthful and intimate in scale, the work provides an appealing glimpse into the developing voice of a composer who would go on to become one of Britain's most celebrated musical figures.
