Charles Tomlinson Griffes - Poem for Flute and Piano, revised and edited by Ervin Monroe. The musical talents of Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) became apparent when he began playing piano as a youngster. His performance skills were of such high quality that his local piano teacher in Elmira, New York, sponsored him to further his studies in Berlin, Germany. He studied  composition with several well-known composers, most notably Engelbert Humperdinck and Philipp Rufer. The German Romantic influence was prevalent in his early works, though he quickly moved toward other styles, such as Impressionism. His Poem for Flute and Orchestra was premiered by Georges Barrère and the New York Symphony Orchestra in 1919. The early publication of the flute and piano version had many misprints and mistakes. Barrère passed along corrections to hist students, particularly William Kincaid, who taught and performed this work many times during his career. As one of Kincaid's last students, editor Ervin Monroe passes along these changes and corrects some obvious phrasing mistakes as well.
