Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, amazingly catchy as a musical and full of Bernstein's brilliant compositional skill, is here rewritten for flute quintet (with piccolo, 2 c flutes, alto, and bass). The three works of Volume 1 - skillful, elaborate transcriptions of Cool, A Boy Like That, and America - take advantage of the quintet's blended sound, and the technical flexibility of the flute, to turn the three works into idiomatic flute works.
