Andrea Catozzi originally composed Beelzebub as a virtuosic solo piece for Tuba, specifically for the 1886 competition of solo instrumental music held by Carl Fischer Music. It was selected as the winner and since then has become a standard work in the tuba repertoire. Orlando-based clarinetist and arranger Joey Rosati has arranged this work in such a way that the solo part can be played by either a (B-flat) contrabass or (E-flat) contralto clarinet, with accompaniment by a clarinet choir. Additionally, two parts are provided for the contrabass clarinet, one for a standard range instrument, and one for an extended range instrument.

Instrumentation:

  • Solo Contra Clarinet (Contrabass or Contralto)
  • Eb Clarinet
  • 4 Clarinets
  • Alto Clarinet (Basset Horn/Clarinet 5)
  • Bass Clarinet 1
  • Bass Clarinet 2 (Contrabass Clarinet/Contralto Clarinet/String Bass)
