Van Landeghem, Jan

As a composer, Jan has written more than over 250 works. Primarily for chamber music ensembles, symphonic orchestra and choir. His compositions are performed all over the world. Jan has won a number of prestigious international awards and prizes. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Antwerp, Klara (the Belgian classical radio station), and the cities of Bruges and Sint-Niklaas are just a few of the organisations that have commissioned works from this talented composer.  Inspired by classical masters of the past as well as by modern composers such as Lutoslawski and Berio, his contemporary style is infused with a profound sense of spirituality and aims to convey a message of humanity.

As a performer, Jan Van Landeghem has given concerts in Europe, USA and the Far East. Both as soloist and as a member of the All’armi Duo and Trio. In 2000, together with his wife, Jenny Spanoghe, he founded Duo Landini. Duo Landini gives successful concerts in Europe and abroad.  They also made several recordings of the composer’s own work as well as classical repertoire. Together with violin builders De Neys and Louppe, Jan and Jenny designed  and pioneered the five-string viola.

Much in demand as teacher, Jan has given lectures at the Conservatoires of Bologna, Gent, Hiroshima, Brno, Prague, Mexico-City and Montréal. In 1985 he obtained an appointment as Fulbright Professor at the Atlanta State University. 

Jan is a honorary professor at the Brussels Royal Conservatory, where he was teacher of Fredérik Neyrinck and Chong Kee Young, among others. Jan was also 30 years director of the Academy for Music, Theatre and Dance of Bornem. This academy won the First Prize for Best Academy in Belgium.

In 2018 Jan obtained the title of Dr. of Arts at VUB and the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Brussels. He is currenlty professor at the Musica Mundi School in Waterloo.
