Gevers, Sam
Sam Gevers (Belgium, 1985) holds a Master of Music (Percussion & Conducting) from the Antwerp Royal Conservatory.
He was taught by Carlo Willems, Koen Wilmaers, Patrick de Smet and Dirk De Caluwe.
Sam also earned his teaching degree, had lessons at the Antwerp Jazz Studio and followed masterclasses with Randy Max (USA), Dave Weckl (USA), Arthur Lipner (USA) and others.
Since 2010 Sam is full time drummer in the Royal Band of the Belgian Navy. With this band he plays worldwide with guests as Paquito D'Rivera, Johnny Logan, Ozark Henry,...
As a freelance musician he played with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of Belgium, Symphonic Factory and many more. In these orchestras some famous conductors crossed his path: f.i. Takuo Yuasa (Jap), Jaap Van Zweden (Ned) and Pincchas Steinberg (Ger). In many performances at the Night of the Proms with Il Novecento, he accompanied world famous artists as Donna Summer, Ike Turner, Macy Gray. As freelance drummer/percussion player he worked on many shows as Evita, Elisabeth, Joseph, Oliver!, Fiddler on the roof, Cinderella, Chaplin, Wizard of Oz, Scrooge... Performing all these plays and concerts, he came across the whole wide world.
For 5 years, Sam was teaching percussion and ensemble at the Conservatory of Mechelen, Belgium. Currently Sam is teaching "Creative project" at Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, AP University College.
He is founder of the trio “Percussive”, which was one the leading percussion groups, touring in the Belgian theatres for the last 10 years.
Sam made a serie of short percussion videos which were broadcasted many times on national television. For one of these movies he was granted with 2 awards at the Corporate Video Festival.
Sam is composer & Music Director of 10 musicals/shows including "1830", "Zoo of life", "Rubens", "King Albert", “Marie-Antoinette”, "Rubens", “Gheelamania” and “Mol-in-scene”. These mass productions were visited by more then 200000 people. He's also working as MD on the musicals "40-45" & "Daens" (Studio 100) and "The Christmas Show" (Deep Bridge). For the recordings of "1830" he conducted the Budapest Art Orchestra.
As a composer Sam wrote many educational pieces, a lot of songs for Percussive and challenging compositions for percussion solo & ensemble - including commissioned work for ONSK & WMC.
